ASA Norcal President’s Message for January 2012 – Robert P. Lentz III, ASA
Politics will Certainly Have an Interest in You !!!
My thanks to all 44 of you who attended our very successful Mentoring Night on December 8th. It was among our most successful Chapter meetings of recent years.
Pericles said long ago in ancient Greece (and loosely translated here) “You may not have an interest in politics, but politics will certainly have an interest in you.”
Are you aware that $25 of your annual ASA dues is allocated to support our Society’s lobbying efforts in Sacramento?
In the ASA NorCal November Newsletter, our ASA-CA lobbyist in Sacramento, Don Reisner, described two recent new bills (already passed into law) that affect the appraisal profession. Senate Bill 6 focuses on undue influence on appraisers, and amended California law to conform with federal law.
And after ASA-CA supported modifications to remove some objectionable provisions, Senate Bill 706, is also now law. As first introduced, and among other provisions (including continuing education), Bill 706 would have allowed any complaint regarding an appraiser’s services to become public knowledge. These ASA-CA lobbying efforts showed the California Legislature how those bills, as originally proposed, would have had a negative impact on our profession and the general public.
The California legislative session resumes on January 4, 2012. ASA-CA is reviewing these and other legislative issues that affect our profession, and how best to address them in a positive and constructive manner to benefit the public and our membership.
On Thursday, January 19th (NOTE the THIRD Thursday, rather than our usual second Thursday of the month), our Chapter will have as our special guest Mike Evans (FASA- RP Rural, a member of our chapter and the 2009-2010 ASA International President). With Ray Mattison (ASA – RP Urban, and a founding member of ASA-CA), Mike will discuss the current operations of ASA-CA, ASA’s legislative affairs and how they affect you. ‘See you there!
Bob
